Introducing our inaugural Lake Okeechobee (Florida) Tour for 2026!
Our riders have asked us for new adventures, and as Pampered Pedalers, we are excited to deliver a new edition to our growing ride catalog!
If you seek a tour in solitude surrounded by natural beauty, you’ll discover a paradise in southern Florida. Three days of cycling around the elevated Herbert Hoover Dike encircling Lake Okeechobee, followed by a final day’s ride through sugarcane fields and lush wilderness on the Florida Trail. Expect plenty of wind—sometimes at your back, sometimes in your face!
The Herbert Hoover Dike, an impressive engineering feat built in the 1930s, sits perched high above the lake offering spectacular views of the lake and its flora, fauna, and wildlife. Lake Okeechobee is Florida’s largest lake and the second-largest freshwater lake completely within the contiguous United States, famously known as the Bass Fishing Capital of the World.
The tour will take place the first week of November (1-6), a spoke tour based out of one hotel in Clewiston for all five nights, keeping things simple and comfortable. Midweek, we’ll enjoy a fun day where you can opt to cycle, golf, fish, or go air boating, all included in the tour price, proceeded by a private tour of the Clewiston Museum. Over the week we will savor a variety of meals at unique restaurants, have fun and be merry.
Participants can expect a combination of paved and gravel routes, with only limited sections on roads shared with cars and several bridge crossings. The gravel sections resemble the crushed limestone found on rail trails and provide a stable riding surface. Please note that this tour is not suitable for road bikes; a minimum tire size of 35mm is recommended, along with adequate sun and wind protection.
Day 0 - Clewiston, FL

- The Hampton Inn in Clewiston will serve as our base throughout the week-long tour. On Sunday, rider check-in is scheduled from 3:30 to 4:30 PM, allowing participants plenty of time to arrive and settle in. Following check-in, a rider meeting and pizza party will be held at the hotel starting at 5:00 PM.

- Rider Meeting & Pizza Party 5:00 PM
- Overnight: Clewiston, FL
Day 1 - Clewiston to Lakeport

- On the first day, cyclists embark on a 27-mile spin from Clewiston, heading west along the dike to Lakeport. After the ride, a shuttle will transport participants back to Clewiston (30 minutes). Those looking for extra miles can choose to do the route as an out-and-back for more miles.

Day 2 - Sugarcane Fields \ Florida Trail

- Day 2 involves cycling on a segment of the Florida Trail, running alongside an irrigation dike through expansive sugarcane fields south of Clewiston. This pristine area presents abundant natural beauty. The official route covers 32 miles; however, mileage can be adjusted to accommodate individual preferences. The trail consists entirely of high-quality gravel, offering exceptional conditions for cycling.

- Sugarcane Fields / Florida Trail
Day 3 - Off Day \ Fun Day

It’s a cycle vacation, so let’s have some fun. The ride presents several options for the off day, or you can also opt to ride the last quadrant of the lake loop. You can choose from one of three activities included in your registration fee:
- An estimated 90 minute air boat ride in the lake.
- A fishing outing with a local guide,anticipated as a half-day outing.
- A round of golf. Club rental is an option, but if you have your own clubs, please plan to bring them along with your own tees and balls.
Day 4 - Okeechobee to Canal Point

- Following the day of fun, participants will be back on the bike for Day 4. This final 38-mile segment of the LOL traverses the northernmost area of the lake and involves both shuttle drop-off and pick-up services. The route passes through the lake’s most densely populated region and includes brief sections where cyclists must ride on roads and cross bridges. Along the way, there are opportunities to stop for lunch.
- 38 Miles
- Okeechobee to Canal Point
Day 5 - Canal Point to Clewiston

- The final day features a 31-mile pedal. The journey starts with a shuttle to Canal Point, riders then head southwest and end back at the host hotel in Clewiston. For those looking for extra mileage, there's an option to keep riding along the dike and then return to Clewiston.

Riding Planning
Wind is a consistent factor throughout this ride, and the elevated dike further increases wind exposure. The following itinerary serves as a proposed framework; adjustments may be made to route order as the week progresses and wind conditions are evaluated. The trail at sundown is equally blissful, so afternoon rides will also be considered in lieu of morning rides. In short, your flexibility is much appreciated.
It is recommended to select a bicycle that offers both comfort in anticipation of riding in windy conditions and an ergonomic seating position. The Florida Trail segment, along with portions of the LOL, feature good quality gravel. Road bikes with narrow tires are unsuitable for these segments. Riders ride a range of bikes, including hybrids, mountain bikes, comfort bikes, and E-bikes. A minimum tire width of 35mm is advised to ensure safety and performance on these routes. Spare tubes and patches, as well as ability to change a flat tire, are always required on any BPP ride.
Restrooms and shaded seating areas are available throughout most of the perimeter of Lake Okeechobee, and facilities are clearly marked and easily accessible. BPP will organize SAG locations and a selection of beverages and snacks will be provided.
The Florida Trail segment runs through a remote area where restroom facilities are scarce beyond natural options. However, there will be at least one strategically placed SAG stop along the 20-plus-mile route. This segment is isolated and features limited access points.
Most of the LOL ride takes place on the elevated dike trail, which is paved and in good condition with minimal cracking. Less than one-fifth of the route is gravel, similar to that found on rail trails.
Please note that the tour does not include approximately one-quarter of the loop around Lake Okeechobee, unless selected as a rest day alternative. The northwest quadrant of the lake loop offers two options: gravel or road riding. During the most recent evaluation, the gravel route in this section was found to be rough and not ideal for cycling. The road option features a narrow, rideable shoulder with rumble strips and is subject to traffic speeds exceeding 55 mph.
The final day features an extensive gravel ride tracing the canal adjacent to sugarcane fields, officially recognized as part of the Florida Trail. In comparison to the favorable sections of the LOL route, this segment offers superior riding quality.
